Auto sales tax is computed on the taxable amount (which varies by state — most states allow a trade-in tax credit, several tax the full price) multiplied by your state's combined rate. Pick your state below for a calculator pre-filled with the statewide base rate and tax basis.
Estimate only. Estimate only. Not a loan offer, lender quote, dealer quote, lease agreement, retail installment sales contract, DMV estimate, or financial advice. Actual rates, payments, taxes, fees, incentives, residual values, insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs may vary.

How this is calculated
Sales tax = taxable amount × combined rate. The taxable amount depends on your state's rules — most states deduct the trade-in value before tax, several tax the full price, and a handful charge a separate excise or use tax instead of standard sales tax.
The state pages pre-fill the statewide base rate. Counties and cities can add local sales taxes on top of the state rate. For a non-state-specific version, use the generic auto sales tax and fees calculator. For background, read auto sales tax and fees explained.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you have a calculator for every US state?
- Yes — all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Each state page is pre-filled with the statewide base sales tax rate and the state's tax basis (whether trade-in value is deducted before tax).
- Why do tax rates and bases differ between state pages?
- Each state sets its own sales tax rate, and several states use a different basis — most allow a trade-in tax credit, but some (e.g. California, Hawaii) tax the full vehicle price. A few states (AK, DE, MT, NH, OR) levy no statewide sales tax at all, though local taxes or fees may still apply.
- Are the rates shown here the rate I'll pay?
- The rate shown is the statewide base. Counties, cities, and special districts can add local sales taxes, so your combined rate at the address of purchase may be higher. Verify with your state DMV and dealer before signing.
