Auto Sales Tax and Fees Explained

How sales tax is calculated on a car purchase, the common tax bases by state, and the documentation, title, registration, and dealer fees that round out your out-the-door price.

Sales tax and dealer fees can add several thousand dollars to a car purchase. Both vary by state and locality, so the same vehicle at the same price can have very different out-the-door numbers depending on where you register it.

How sales tax is calculated

Sales tax is a percent of a "taxable amount." States differ on what counts as the taxable amount:

  • Vehicle price — tax on the full negotiated price.
  • Price minus trade-in — many states subtract the trade-in value before applying tax. This can save real money if you're trading a car in.
  • Price minus rebate — some states tax after manufacturer rebates, some before.
  • Price minus trade and rebate — both deductions allowed.
  • Custom amount — for unusual situations or out-of-state purchases.

Our calculator lets you pick the basis that matches your state. Tax rate combines the state, county, and sometimes city components, so a single state can have many effective rates. Always confirm with your dealer or state DMV.

The fees that show up on top

Documentation (doc) fee. Charged by the dealer to process paperwork. Some states cap this; many do not.

Title fee. A flat state fee to issue the new title.

Registration. May be flat, weight-based, or value-based. Some states roll an annual vehicle excise or ad valorem fee into the registration line.

Dealer add-ons. Optional services, prep fees, and protection products. These are negotiable and often skippable.

Putting it together

Out-the-door price = vehicle price + sales tax + fees − rebates. The amount you finance is the out-the-door price minus your down payment and any positive trade-in equity.

Use the sales tax and fees calculator to estimate your total, then drop the result into the auto loan calculator to see the monthly payment.

These are estimates only. State, local, dealer, and timing rules change. Confirm exact amounts with your dealer and your state DMV before signing.
