Auto Loan Amortization Calculator

Updated

Build a complete month-by-month amortization schedule with the interest paid so far, then see what a lump-sum payment or an early payoff saves. Switch to yearly totals or download as CSV.

An amortization schedule splits each fixed monthly payment into the interest charged on the current balance and the principal that pays the loan down. Enter loan amount, APR, and term to generate the full schedule.

Estimate only. Estimate only. Not a loan offer, lender quote, dealer quote, lease agreement, retail installment sales contract, DMV estimate, or financial advice. Actual rates, payments, taxes, fees, incentives, residual values, insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs may vary.

  • Term60 months
  • InterestCharged monthly at APR ÷ 12, with each payment on the same day of the month. Most auto loans accrue interest daily, so statements can differ by a few dollars

How this is calculated

Each month: interest = beginning balance × APR/12. Principal = scheduled payment − interest. The balance steps down to zero by the end of the term. Interest paid so far is the running total of the interest column.

Early payoff: paying the loan off after a given month costs the balance left after that month's payment. You pay the interest up to that month and save the rest. Extra payment: a lump sum goes straight to principal and the monthly payment stays the same, so every later month charges interest on a smaller balance and the loan ends early.

Worked example: $75,000 at 4% for 60 months is $1,381.24 a month and $7,874.36 in total interest. Paying it off after month 12 takes $61,173.47 and saves $5,126.01. A $50,000 extra payment with month 1 instead ends the loan in month 19 and saves $6,868.06.

Frequently asked questions

What is amortization?
Amortization splits each fixed monthly payment into interest and principal. As the balance falls, the share that goes to principal grows.
Can I download the schedule?
Yes — the schedule can be exported to CSV or printed.
How much interest do I save by paying off my car loan early?
Everything the schedule would have charged after the month you pay it off. On $75,000 at 4% for 60 months, paying off after month 12 means $2,748.35 in interest instead of $7,874.36, saving $5,126.01. Interest is charged on the balance, so the early months carry the most of it and paying off late in the loan saves less. This assumes a simple-interest loan with no prepayment penalty.
